Fraud Alert

The Herkimer County Office of the Aging has recently been made aware of a telephone scam that is targeting senior citizens across New York State.

Senior citizens are being contacted by phone by an individual claiming that a friend/relative has purchased a medical alert system for them and it is available at no cost to them.  This individual then attempts to set up an appointment to come to the senior citizens home to install the equipment.  This is a scam and anyone contacted should hang up immediately. Here are some other helpful hints in helping prevent fraud against senior citizens:

REMEMBER, any offer that sounds too good to be true probably is.

NEVER provide your personal information when receiving unsolicited calls or contacts.  If a caller asks you to pay for an offer in advance or asks for your credit card number or Social Security number, tell the person you don't give out personal information over the telephone.

NEVER agree to send or wire money to an unknown person
